50 Great Voices, Part 4

David Sylvian's always been a favorite singer of mine. He's got a great voice -- sounds a bit like Brian Ferry of Roxy Music, but with a deeper, throatier quality. Sylvian's had a few hit singles, particularly in the late 1970s and early '80s with the group Japan (their quasi-Asian glam-rock stage image was copped by Duran Duran, who had much more success with much less interesting music.) Since Japan disbanded, Sylvian's made a ton of interesting albums. The song "The Scent of Magnolia" was, believe it or not, a leftover from one of his albums -- this tune should've been a single. But when someone's outtakes are better than half the crap on the radio, it only emphasizes their talent:
