Sky Saxon, 1946? - 2009

Singer Sky Saxon died the same day as Michael Jackson. And I guess it's no surprise Jackson's death got way more press attention. For one thing, Jackson sold roughly eleventy-zillion records. In comparison, Saxon sold about eleven records.

Saxon was born Richard Marsh in Salt Lake City [!], in 1937, 1945 or 1946 ... no one knows for sure and Sky wasn't talkin'. His group The Seeds had one Top 40 hit in 1966 with "Pushin' Too Hard." The song is ridiculously catchy, built on a single riff. YouTube has clips of The Seeds performing the song, but they're all (badly) lip-synched:

Their follow-up single "Can't Seem To Make You Mine" never made the national charts. But it's almost as well-known (relatively speaking). The Ramones did a good version of the song on their (underrated) Acid Eaters collection of covers...

...while Garbage also recorded a version of the song and...

...and Shirley Manson is distracting. Sorry. Where was I?

Ah yes.

R.I.P., Sky...
